Word Journeys

Words that travelled the world before reaching your mouth.

Word Journeys follows ordinary words back to where they began: tea, té and chai as one Chinese word that took two roads, robot born in a Czech play, tomato from the language of the Aztecs. Words travel with the things they name, and their shape still shows the route.

Each piece traces one word through the languages it passed on its way into the ones we speak today, and explains the history that moved it — trade, conquest, science, fashion. The routes come from etymological dictionaries and linguistic research: every article is written with the help of AI, checked against at least two independent sources, such as established dictionaries, language atlases, scholarly editions and historical records, and lists them at the end. Where an origin is disputed, the article shows the competing explanations instead of choosing the prettiest one.
